About
Good Times & Good Eats In The Devil’s Kitchen
In this kitchen, we like to get up to some devilish good fun and create some delicious temptations. Cooking should be fun. So should eating.
Therefore, when we cook In The Devil’s Kitchen, all those angelic rules and taboos get left at the door. Taste trumps discretion. Chocolate is revered. Butter is used liberally.
However, even though we tend to err on the wicked side (as in “wickedly delicious”), this does not mean we toss healthy eating out the window. On the contrary, you’ll find many healthy (yet devilishly delicious) recipes In The Devil’s Kitchen. Look to the Devil Ratings and decide how devilish you want to be in your kitchen. But remember this, the angels aren’t watching – so you can be a little wicked.
Devil Ratings
A One Devil rating is given to any recipe In The Devil’s Kitchen that, while still devilishly delicious, is very healthy for you. While we shun the evils of trans fatty acids and processed foods in all of our recipes (well, except for the occasional deadly nacho chips and some questionable luncheon meats), the One Devil rated recipes make use of extra healthy ingredients – such as brown rice, lots of fresh vegetables, and other stuff that is just plain healthy for you. Of course, letting taste triumph discretion, we only use ingredients like brown rice when it’s rich flavour adds to our enjoyment of the final dish. (See our Ingredients for more info)
A Two Devil rating indicates a slight walk on the wild side. Just a little wicked – but a good wicked. No longer what a strict nutritionist would recommend for daily consumption, or what a diet plan would fully approve of, but still a balance of healthy and just a little bad. A Two Devil rated recipe may have a heavy dollop of butter, a generous addition of sugar, or other not so angelic ingredients – but, all in all, it’s still pretty good for you.
A Three Devil rating is given to a recipe that throws all caution to the wind. Calories be damned, full steam ahead in search of culinary delight. Yes, these recipes are wicked, but you only live once and food is meant to be enjoyed. Delve into the Three Devil ratings when you’re in the mood to be bad – tell them the devil made you do it.
Categories
In a hurry to find a certain type of dish? Look to the categories in the menu above. You’ll find desserts, side dishes, soups & salads, and a number of other categories.
One that really is universal is the special Breakfasts category – for we all know that breakfasts are not just for breakfast. There’s nothing like whipping up a batch of pancakes as a midnight snack for some devilish fun. And some of the special French toast recipes you’ll discover can be a highlight of any meal.
If you’re looking for the basics (like soup stocks and pie crusts), you’ll find them in the Basics & Techniques category. You’ll also find helpful videos that show how to keep cakes from sticking, cleanly peel a hard boiled egg, and make a lump-free white sauce.
Ingredients will make or break any recipe. For truly devilishly delicious recipes, you need good (nay, great) ingredients. Because of their importance, ingredients get their own special category. Take some time to peruse it and stock your kitchen for devilish delights.
That Food Devil Kevin Riley
I started cooking when I was about six years old – baking mini apple pies in my own mini pie pan. My love for cooking and good food has led to a life of culinary adventure, and I share it all with you In The Devil’s Kitchen. However, I’m not a professional chef (I’m a dedicated foodie who has been experimenting and creating recipes since he was a kid), so you won’t find complicated, overly elaborate dishes here that you can only replicate if you have a sous chef and numerous kitchen gadgets on hand. Rather, you’ll find easy, fun, and devilishly delicious recipes that you can easily master in your own kitchen.
You’ll find the delightful Christmas cookies I enjoy whenever I visit my hometown in Switzerland, the fantastic chicken soup I once tasted in Bali and recreated in my kitchen, a beef stew from Belgium that will warm the coldest winter night, a sophisticated lemon and chocolate bar you could serve to the most discerning guests, deep-dish lasagna that oozes temptation and has you finishing off the leftovers at midnight, and – of course, In The Devil’s Kitchen – deviled eggs.
There are some fancy dished In The Devil’s Kitchen that you can serve when food snobs come to visit, but mainly you’ll find lots of comfortable food that is fun and easy to create. Have a great time In The Devil’s Kitchen.
